Santa Sugar Cookies
Made by Sue Aldred at the Rosa M. Harvey Middleton and Area Library.
1 1/2 cups butter, softened
1 1/2 cups shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups icing sugar
4 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 large eggs
6 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 1/2 salt
Red sprinkles for Santa’s hat
M & M’s or skittles for eyes and nose
Red jimmies for mouth
Cream the first four ingredients until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla and eggs, one at a time.
Sift together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture.
Divide dough in half, wrap in saran and refrigerate until firm enough to roll – 1-2 hours.
Preheat oven to 350. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with a 3.5 inch
heart-shaped cookie cutter. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake 8 – 10 minutes. Do not overbake.
Cool on wire racks. Decorate. Enjoy! (Makes 5 dozen)
