About Julie Flett

Julie Flett is an award-winning author, illustrator and artist currently living in Vancouver, BC. She is Cree-Métis. Julie studied fine arts at Concordia University in Montreal and Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver. She received the Christie Harris Illustrated Children’s Literature Prize and was nominated for the Governor General’s Award for Children’s Literature for her book Owls See Clearly at Night (Lii Yiiboo Nayaapiwak lii Swer): A Michif Alphabet (L’alphabet di Michif).

Her more recent books are garnering attention as well, including the “Choices 2017” picture books for school-age children best-of-the-year list by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center for  When We Were Alone.  She has illustrated several board books that depict diverse characters in familiar settings.

Of her books, Julie Flett says, “I’m making books I would have wanted to see when I was little, that I would have shared with my own son and community. They’re not meant to be obscure. They’re meant to be accessible to everyone.”  Read more from her in this interview on 49th Shelf.
