Jon Klassen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and grew up in Niagara Falls and Toronto. In high school, he worked in his family’s candle factory, which he says made him smell like cinnamon.  Though he considers Toronto his hometown, Jon currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California, with his wife and their young son.

Jon Klassen is the first Canadian to win the Caldecott Award, which he received for his book This is Not My Hat. He received a Caldecott honor the same year for his illustrations in Mac Barnett’s picture book Extra Yarn, and another Caldecott honor in 2015 for Sam and Dave Dig a Hole. He won a Governor General’s Literary Award in 2010 for his picture-book illustration debut, Cats’ Night Out and the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal (he’s the first Canadian to claim the U.K. award since it was established in 1955). His humour and wit have made him an International kidlit star!
