About Ami

Ami McKay is the author of two critically acclaimed novels, The Virgin Cure and The Birth House, which was a #1 bestseller in Canada, winner of three CBA Libris Awards, and nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

While writing her new novel, The Witches of New York, she discovered several women in her family tree who were accused and tried for witchcraft. Born and raised in Indiana, Ami now lives in Scots Bay, Nova Scotia.

The Birth House appears on the Nova Scotia 150 Books of Influence list.

In Ami’s own words:

Most of my work comes from places where the past collides with the present, and fantastic things occur in unexpected ways. They’re all fairy tales of one sort or another, I suppose. But no matter what anyone chooses to call them, they have one thing in common: strong women doing remarkable things.

I write the stories I want to read.
I write what I wish to be.

Ami’s slideshow from the Witches Of New York Canadian Tour:

Nova Scotia library staff and a few lucky members of the public shared a bewitching evening with Ami McKay at the Nova Scotia Library Association Annual Conference this year. She sat down with AVRL librarian Angela Reynolds to talk about writing The Witches of New York and even hinted at what is to come!

What is Book Club 150?

To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, we are highlighting a different Canadian author or illustrator for each month of 2017. To celebrate with us, we encourage you to read the books, join our online conversation, and enter our monthly contests. Our featured books include titles for kids, teens, and adult readers. Pick up a copy at your local library, look for a Book Club in a Bag to share, or find a library Book Club near you. We’ll have special events and contests throughout the year, so be sure to visit our library website at www.valleylibrary.ca, or look for feature posts each month on our new library blog site, RenewYourCuriosity.ca.
